Online Ethics
With the recent launch of Content Code 2022 by independent self-regulatory industry body, The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia, we sat down for a podcast session with CMCF’s Executive Director, Mediha Mahmood and Telcowin’s Marketing Manager, Puteri Salina.
Some of the things touched on in the podcast were the eight key enhancements made to the updated Content Code. The reason behind the update was the fact that Content Forum turned 20 in 2021 and the previous version of the Content Code did not cover certain policy gaps.
With a nationwide public consultation, CMCF eventually came up with the eight key enhancements mentioned earlier. These eight points discusses, among other things, online sellers. The idea is to gate keep over-claiming by certain sellers. If in the past, this was seen as misleading advertising, these days advertisers have become increasingly creative with their dubious claims.
An example given was a recent case where an influencer began selling henna but buyers complained that the end product did not match the photos and videos posted online. Apart from unethical advertising, online abuse was also brought up in the podcast as Mediha states what is and isn’t considered harassment.
